The collection mostly contains recordings made during Mahuta’s studies as research material for his thesis on whaikōrero. Various hui and events were recorded, mostly centred around Turangawaewae marae.

Some recordings relating to his teaching activities also feature, including speak and response exercises, a conference recording, and a sampler of whaikōrero patterns made from field recordings.

Paula Afe Havea, Garth Rogers and Wendy Pond made an expedition to Tafahi Island in 1969 to record accounts by elders. These recordings were made in the home of each speaker, with Paula conducting the interviews. The accounts by Pauteni of Tafahi were conducted while talking to Tavi Maupiti, Garth Rogers and Wendy Pond.
