Tagi O Kakai and Fakanau; Tafaoga - Traditional games; Solo recordings; Miscellaneous, 1986
Scope and Contents
A series of songs, music and Tafaoga (traditional games) recorded on separate occasions in Nukunonu, Tokelau.
Each of the solo recordings was made in the context of, or following, an interview. Singers include: Tuia Ahelemo, Lui Kanava, Ihaia Puka, Apolo Ioakimi, Monika Alefohio and Teuila Silao.
The Tafaoga or traditional games were initally recorded on videotape in early November 1986. They were performed by children of Nukunonu School and were directed by Kalolo Tumua, school teacher and enthusiast for traditional games (see item 1/14). All the game chants were repeated for sound recording on 26 November by a group of four children supervised by Kotelano Kele. These recordings were intended to give a plain rendition of the words and chant of the game songs without the action of the game, or the added hilarity of the competition.
