(2) Indenture made on the 20 February, 1872, witnessing the sale by Ania, a Samoan, of the District of Alapata, Upolu, Samoa to John Lawrie, a British subject residing at Alapata, of a parcel of land called "Ulsaia", situated at Alapata, in consideration of the sum of $112 paid to him by John Lawrie. Inwards letters of the British Consular Office, Fiji, relating mainly to Tonga affairs. (3 Feb., 1868 – 19 Feb., 1876). This correspondence was forwarded by the British Consul for Fiji, E.L. Layard, to Sir Arthur Gordon, Governor of Fiji, on the 28 March, 1876, and was presumably transmitted later, for purposes of reference, to the British Consulates at Naku'alofa., 1868-1876

Foster in favour of Moses David. Scope and Contents

The file consist largely of letters and memorials addressed to Sir Arthur Gordon by foreign residents in Tonga complaining about the conduct of certain Tongan Government officials, together with drafts of replies on behalf of Sir Arthur Gordon and correspondence received from the Tongan Government in relation to the complaints.

Scope and Contents

This Agreement foreshadowed the Treaty of Friendship between Britain and Tonga concluded on the 29 November, 1879, and is referred to in a letter from A.P. Maudslay to Sir Arthur Gordon dated the 30 September, 1878, and in Despatch No. 12 of the 14 October, 1878, Acting High Commissioner to Secretary of State.
