Scope and Contents

Of particular interest among these papers is a file of documents relating to the case of John Morton, a British subject, who was sent from Tonga to Samoa in November, 1876, to be tried for an offence alleged to have been committed by him in Tonga. The file was forwarded by R.S. Swanston, Acting British Consul, for Samoa, to A.P. Maudslay, Acting Consul-General, under cover of a despatch dated 6 November, 1878, together with the original of a Foreign Office Consular despatch, No. 7 of the 27 June, 1877, T.V. Lister to Edward Liardet, H.M.'s Consul, Samoa, instructing him to report as to the reasons for Morton's having been sent to Samoa for trial, and as to the authority under which the Consul at Samoa had tried him and incurred expenses on his account.
