Agreement signed at Nuku'alofa on the 14 March, 1899, by H.M. King George Tubou II of Tonga and by Captain L.C. Stuart R.N., commanding H.M.S. "Tauranga", and R.B. Leefe, Deputy Commissioner and Vice Consul, on behalf of H.M. Queen Victoria, pledging the King of Tonga "never to cede or transfer any of His Rights of Sovereignty nor - except in so far as He may be expressly bound by existing Treaties or Engagements - to Cede Sell Mortgage or otherwise give for occupation any part of His Territory to any Foreign Power.", 1899
Scope and Contents
This document is a manuscript "triplicate original", done in English and Tongan, bearing the seal of the Kingdom of Tonga, the signatures of the King, L.C. Stuart and R.B. Leefe and the signatures of J. Fatafehi, Minister of Lands, Jiosateki Toga Veikune, Premier, and Chas A. Parker as witnesses.
The document is endorsed with the words "Registered in the Archives of Her Britannic Majesty's Consulate at Tonga as No. 41 at Pages 125, 126 and 127, Folio IV on the sixteenth day of March, 1899."
