Scope and Contents The papers in this collection cover the period 1946 to 1953 and concern industrial relations on the waterfront in the years leading up to the 1951 waterfront dispute, the dispute itself, and the immediate aftermath. The collection includes minutes, correspondence, notes, reports, pamphlets and clippings. Wilfred McAra collection relating to the building industry.

Abstract

The records relate mainly to McAra’s association with the Wellington Branch of the Amalgamated Carpenters and Joiners Union between 1938 and 1946. They document McAra’s participation in the Branch’s Housing Committee, later known as the Building Investigation Committee, established in 1938, to investigate the growing housing shortage in New Zealand.
