Scope and Contents

The journal of Charles Pickering in his handwriting, kept by him while on the United States Exploring Expedition (Wilkes Commander). This journal contains detailed descriptions of various islands in the Pacific, including Hawaii, Lord Howe Island, Norfolk Island, New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Coral Islands as well as descriptions of S.E. Australia, Antarctic continent, Chile and Peru.

Scope and Contents

The bulk of the collection consists of photographic prints taken in the early 1900s by Edward Payton. The photographs are mainly of landscapes taken by Payton during his travels around Aotearoa New Zealand, but there are also photographs of Māori, Pākehā settlers, pā sites and settlements. The collection also contains etchings by Payton and photocopies from his sketchbooks.

The collection includes sepia-toned and black and white images in a variety of print sizes.

Scope and Contents Photo-album with pictures of New Zealand at the beginning of the 20th-century, showing landscapes and the customs and costumes of the Ma¯ori people. It is a presentation album to Rear-Admiral A. F. Beal, with compliments of Richard Francis Bollard (1863-1927), Minister of Internal Affairs, Wellington, New Zealand.
