Scope and Contents Transcript of a journal kept by John Martyn on his voyage from England to New Zealand November 1857 to March 1858; and notes in diary form, and in the form of letters to relatives, covering the period 1858 to 1869 in Auckland and South Auckland. Entries mention the Auckland city fire of July 7 1858, describe farm life, give advice to intending immigrants; and discuss the likelihood of war with the Maori in the Waikato, with descriptions of the little N.Z. army. Collection comprises a student research essay by Valerie Willis. The essay offers an alternative analysis of the "Ngati Paoa invasion" of Auckland in 1851 which was essentially intertribal warfare between Ngati Paoa, supported by Ngati Tamatera and Ngati Whanaunga. This was sparked when the Ngati Paoa chief, Te Hoera, was struck by a Maori policeman who happened to be a member of the Ngati Paoa tribe
