The 100-year restriction is in line with the University's R1 restriction and the Births, Deaths, Marriages and Relationships Registration Amendment Act 1995 (section 78G). Mediated access is necessary as the index contains birth details of individuals still alive. Enquirers could potentially access other peoples’ birth details and apply for certificates based on this information. There is a risk of identity theft as well as a potential privacy breach.
