Scope and Contents

The collection comprises material collected by Phil Dadson during his involvement in the planning and administration of SoundCulture '99. It has been arranged into three series.

Series 1: 'Background material' contains items relating to three earlier festivals: SoundWatch '92 and SoundWatch '94 which were held in Auckland; and SoundCulture '96 which was held in San Francisco and included performances by Phil Dadson at New Langdon Arts.

Series 2: 'Administrative material' contains correspondence, minutes, budgets, calls for proposals, and other planning material, as well as festival ephemera, documentation, and related publications.

Series 3: 'Artist proposals' contains outlines of proposed artworks and supporting material submitted by artists wishing to participate in the festival.

Biographical / Historical

SoundCulture comprised a series of festivals focused on contemporary sound art in the Pacific region and its interface with society and culture. The festivals comprised sound performances and sculptures, installations and public works, radio art, and lectures and symposia.

SoundCulture '99 was held in Auckland from March 13 to 20, 1999, after previous iterations in Sydney (1991), Tokyo (1993), and San Francisco (1996). It was organised by director Tabatha Forbes and a committee including Phil Dadson (head of the Intermedia department at Elam School of Fine Arts), Kate Darrow (Manager Art and Access, Auckland Art Gallery), Robert Leonard (Director of Artspace), and writer and curator Richard Dale. The keynote speaker was Douglas Kahn (United States).

The festival was presented at multiple venues throughout Auckland including the New Gallery, Auckland Art Gallery, Lopdell House, Artspace, and St Paul's Church. Participating international sound and visual artists included Ed Osborn (United States), Heri Dono (Indonesia), Pamela Z (United States), Akio Suzuki (Japan), and Nigel Helyer (Australia) and Simo Alitalo (Finland). New Zealand artists included Billy Apple, John Ioane, Tabatha Forbes, Phil Dadson, John Lyall, and Hirini Melbourne and Terry O'Connor.
