Biographical / Historical
Bronwynne Cornish (1945-) is a notable New Zealand ceramicist. Born in Wellington, Cornish initially trained as an industrial designer before enrolling at the Wellington College of Education taking classes under the tutelage of Doreen Blumhardt. She became apprentice to the potter Helen Mason, founding member of the Wellington Potters Society, in 1968. This experience marked the start of her career in ceramics and art education.
Cornish held her first significant solo exhibition China Cabinet Ceramics at New Vision Gallery in 1971, she has also been included in numerous exhibitions at Objectspace includingLugosi's Children (2011) and in 2015 a major survey of her work was exhibitied at the Dowse Art Museum entitledMudlark: Bronywnne Cornish, Ceramics 1982-2013.
Known for her ceramic installations featuring mythical creatures, cats, birds and sphinxes, Cornish has exhibited widely and has works held within national and international art collections.
