New Zealand Council of Trade Unions, Auckland District Council records.

The bulk of the files in this collection were donated to the Library by the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions, P.O. Box 6645, Wellington, in May 1996 (through Denise O’Reilly). They included minutes of meetings of the Auckland District Council, and of its Executive, from 1987 to 1993. A set of ‘loose minutes’ of the same body had been received from Mr Ken Johnson of the Nurses Union through Bert Roth in 1993. The two sets of minutes have been retained, though the contents overlap and there is duplication of papers. The arrangement of the two sets is different. This is described below. Front covers of files have been included to indicate how they were presented.

The records comprise, in general, copies of minutes of Executive and Council meetings of the Auckland District Council, together with material relating to those meetings; papers concerned with the organisation and structure of the Auckland District Council; files of various standing committees of the Auckland District Council. The latter contain correspondence, copies of minutes, reports, etc.

An additional file, labelled ‘CTU and Compact [19]89]’, containing for the most part material duplicated in other files, but including some letters and handwritten notes, was found among the papers. This appears to be the collection of some individual member of the Council, but its provenance is unknown.

The New Zealand Council of Trade Unions with area District Councils superseded the New Zealand Federation of Labour in 1988. Records of the Auckland Trades’ Council of the New Zealand Federation of Labour from 1937 to 1988 are held in MSS & Archives 97/10, and a minute book of the earlier body, the Auckland Trades’ and Labour Council of the New Zealand Federation of Labour, at MSS & Archives D-30.
