Biographical / Historical

The Auckland Branch of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners was formed on 2 February 1875 from the Auckland Carpenters and Joiners’ Protection Society formed in 1873.

In 1911 the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners decided to split the Auckland branch into separate branches in Devonport, Eden, Newmarket, Onehunga, Otahuhu and Ponsonby. Auckland then became the Auckland Central Branch until 1915 when it merged with the Ponsonby Branch and again became the Auckland Branch. Because of the number of branches in Auckland a District Committee was set up and aggregate meetings of all Auckland members were held from time to time.

In 1936, following compulsory unionism, the Auckland Branch attempted to cover the Northern Industrial District (north of Taupo) more effectively by setting up sub-branches in provincial towns but most collapsed during the war.

In 1943 a national carpenters' union was formed and Auckland changed its name to the Auckland Branch of the New Zealand Carpenters and Joiners’ and Joiners’ Machinists’ Union.

In 1949 as the result of an industrial dispute the Auckland Branch was de-registered within a radius of 56 miles from the Auckland CPO and a new union, Auckland Carpenters and Joiners’ and Joiners' Machinists’ Industrial Union of Workers, registered to cover workers within this radius. All records and assets of the Auckland Branch were transferred to Hamilton, which became the head office of the Auckland District (excluding the new Union in Auckland city).

The two unions continued until 1959 when both cancelled their registration and formed a new union: the New Zealand (except Otago and Southland) Amalgamated Carpenters and Joiners’ and Joiners' Machinists’ Industrial Union of Workers. Further amalgamation saw the formation of the New Zealand (except Otago and Southland) Carpenters’, Joiners’, Machinists’ and Plasterers’ and (except Auckland) Bricklayers’ and Related Trades’ Industrial Union of Workers which in 1967 became known as the New Zealand Carpenters and Related Trades’ Industrial Union of Workers.
