Biographical / Historical

Ronald Holloway (1909 – 2003) was born in Cheltenham, England, moving to New Zealand in December of 1913, before going back to England in 1920 and returning to New Zealand in 1922. From a young age, he expressed an interest in typography and printing culminating in his management of the Griffin Press. Educated at Auckland Grammar and Mt Albert Grammar, Holloway won a Lizzie Rathborne scholarship in English and History, which paid for three years at the Auckland University College (now the University of Auckland). While at AUC, in 1932, Holloway met Bob Lowry, who was running the college’s printing press at the time, and in 1935 entered into a printing partnership between Holloway’s Griffin Press and Lowry’s Unicorn Press that would eventually result in the consolidation of the Unicorn and Griffin Presses under Holloway. In 1937, Holloway married Kathleen Mary (Kay) Harvey (1911 – 2001) a teacher and author, after meeting her in the premises of the Unicorn and Griffin Presses. They had 8 children, 5 of whom survived them. The Griffin Press, run by Holloway and his wife Kay, operated as a private press producing first press books, along with printing various works for businesses, churches, and individuals over a span of 60 years.
