Biographical / Historical
The Griffin Press was established at Auckland University College by Ronald Holloway in 1934 following the closure of the Auckland University Student Association Press which Bob Lowry with Holloway's assistance had operated since 1932.
Between 1937 and 1938 the Press shared a premises in Kitchener Street with Bob Lowry's Unicorn Press. In July 1938 Holoway took over the plant of the Unicorn press from Lowry as payment of debts Lowry had run up.
In 1945, the Griffin Press moved to Panmure and continued to be operated by Holloway as a private press until the early 1990s, producing fine press books, and printed items for convents, churches, individuals, and societies such as the Ex Libris Society.
