Scope and Contents

The collection contains a manuscript version of part of an appendix to Parsons' PhD thesis Sickness experience and language: aspects of Tongan and Western accounting (University of Waikato, 1981). The manuscript consists of accounts of Tongan sicknesses and therapies, and a section on Tongan medicines by Tupou Posesi Fanua. Some of the accounts were recorded by Tongans under the direction of Fanua who is considered an authority on traditional Tongan culture. The research was funded by the Tongan Government.

Biographical note

Dr Claire Parsons is an internationally-recognised sociologist with a background in Medical Sociology and Medical Anthropology who completed a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Sociology at the University of Waikato in 1981.
