Orakei Marae collection.
Scope and Contents
In 1950 the Ngati Whatua people were removed from their homes at Okahu Bay, Auckland, to state houses on Bastion Point, the land on the flat at Okahu Bay having been compulsorily acquired by the Government under the Public Works Act. The Orakei Marae Trust Board was formed in 1959 with the object of providing a marae so that the Ngati Whatua could re-establish their tribal life and customs. In 1971 the Orakei Marae Development Council was established and a more ambitious programme of building undertaken that had been possible earlier. These documents concern the activities of the two bodies between 1971 and 1976. They include background information, copies of architect's plans of the site, and for proposed buildings on the site; copies of the Bulletin, later the Newsletter, of the Orakei Marae Development Council, and reports of meetings; promotional material on the project; posters; and the programme for the Service of Dedication of the Marae in 1973. Also included is an educational booklet, with teachers guide: Take any city ... / by J.P. Millar. Auckland, Heinemann Educational Books, 1973; and a handwritten letter from Mrs Raima Hayward, wife of Rudall Hayward, discussing the possibility of making a film about the marae.
