Scope and Contents

Collection comprises field notes, correspondence, research paper proofs, transcriptions of songs and chants, maps and island histories relating to the ethnography and ethnomusicology of Samoa, Cook Islands, Lau, Tonga, Niue and Hawaii. The collection also includes the transcriptions and translations of folk tales and a collection of photographs, negatives and film footage taken by Moyle during his fieldwork, and a small amount of collected ephemera. The field notebooks contain indexes to sound recordings which are the held by the Archive of Maori and Pacific Sound.

Biographical / Historical

Richard Moyle was born in Paeroa in 1944 and educated at Auckland Grammar and Avondale College. He gained an Performance Diploma (LTCL) in piano in 1965 from Trinity College London before studying music at the University of Auckland, where he completed the University’s first PhD in ethnomusicology in 1971. He then held teaching positions at Indiana University and the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and for eight years was a Research Fellow at the Australian Institute of Aborigional Studies in Canberra, publishing a trilogy of books on the music of Central Australia. He took up an appointment in anthropology at Auckland University in 1985 and was Director of Pacific Studies from 2007 untill his retirement in 2010. From 1993 to 2010 he directed Auckland University’s Archive of Maori and Pacific Music. He is also Adjunct Professor at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music Research Centre, Griffith University. He is currently (2021) an Honary Professor of Pacific Studies at the University of Auckland.
