Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

This collection comprises one folder of drawings of the volcanoes of the Volcanic Plateau by Laurence Cussen and Thomas(Darby) Ryan. In total there are 12 drawings, 10 by Ryan and 2 by Cussen, most are ink washes. Accompanying the drawings are two mounted photographs. The collection was donated to the Geology Department by one of Cussen's daughters some time prior to 1962.

The majority of the drawings are dated 1891 which is the year that Cussen presented the first topographical survey of the area to the Surveyor-General, S. Percy Smith. In this report, which can be found in the Appendix to the Journals of the House of Representatives, (1891 Session II, C-1a, Appendix no.3) Cussen expresses his indebtedness to Mr T. Ryan for the use of his sketches to illustrate his report and to Professor Algernon Thomas for assisting with the classification of rock samples collected in the area.
