Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

Papers relating to the production of Matagi Tokelau: history and traditions of Tokelau: a collection of Tokelau language texts facilitated, translated and edited by Antony Hooper, Judith Huntsman and Ropati Simona.

The project was proposed by Ron Crocombe at the Institute of Pacific Studies (IPS) at the University of the South Pacific (UPS) as part of his ongoing enterprise of initiating and facilitating Pacific Peoples' accounts of their own history and traditions. Funding was provided by a grant via IPS at UPS via the Office of Tokelau Affairs. The project was approved by the Tokelau General Fono in May 1981and a Book Committee of three representatives from each atoll chaired by Dr Iona Tinielu with Hooper and Huntsman as advisors was formed. The Committee first met at the end of 1991 to decide what would be written and who would write what. The Committee decided that all texts would be written in Tokelauan and no authorship would be attributed.

The Tokelauan version of the book was published in 1990 followed by an English translation in 1991.

This sub-series contains copies of the Tokelau texts, English translations (Red books 1 and 2), key historical texts compiled for the project by Hooper and Huntsman (Blue book), and copies of the maps and illustrations used in the final publication.
