Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

This subseries contains research materials collated as part of Huntsman and Hooper's research for the for second half of Tokelau: a historical ethnography, chapters 4-9. The files in this subseries include copies and transcripts of accounts of visits to Tokelau by European explorers, traders, missionaries and government administrators with accompanying notes by Huntsman and Hooper. The transcripts of original accounts created by Huntsman are especially useful as some of the handwritten originals are difficult to read. Among the copies of archival sources there is some original material including the field notebooks of Andrew Thomson, a meteorologist who spent several months in Tokelau in 1928, which were given to Huntsman by anthropologist, Gordon Macgregor.

Huntsman and Hooper carried out the bulk of the historical research for Tokelau: a historical ethnography between periods of field work, beginning in 1969 when Huntsman spent time locating and examining material relating to the United States Exploring Expedition (1838 -1842) and the logs and journals of American whalers. Their search for historical sources relating to Tokelau continued through the 1970s and 1980s and is described in the introduction to the book.
