Scope and Contents

This material in this series relates to Tokelau: a historical ethnography (1996) a joint publication by Judith Huntsman and Antony Hooper. The evolution of the finished work is covered in some detail in the books introduction.

First half of the book - the ethnographic part - was based on field work carried out by Huntsman and Hooper in Tokelau, while the second half of the book was the result of in depth historical research using the accounts of explorers, missionaries, traders, government officials and other European visitors to Tokelau. Tokelauan accounts of their history were also utilised including Tala or historical tales.

The series has been divided into three subseries; 4/1 - Drafts and material relating to the publication and distribution of the book; 4/2 - Research materials - used by Huntsman and Hooper while writing the second half of the book and 4/3 - Tokelauan historical narratives/recollections.
