Biographical / Historical

The composer of the waiata married an Irish pakeha woman ca.1840. They lived at Patoto Island near Takaka and had three children. Because of continued opposition to the marriage by Te Meihana's aunt and uncles, his wife later left him, taking two fo the children with her. The remaining child become the father of the performer. The song is the composer's last farewell to his wife and children.

A variant of the waiata appears as Ngā Moteatea 129 with a different story. For NM version see item McL 316.
