Biographical / Historical
According to Tom Wete at the recording session held on the 30th September, 1963, the composer of this waiata was Tupangarau. Sam Huia states that it was composed from the words uttered by a captured warrior when he was being tortured by his captors - he was gouged to death with pipi shells in revenge for having killed one of his captors by a strategem. Uehoka Tairākena says the song is for the people who have died suddenly, e.g. by drowning, burning of falling off a tree.
