Biographical / Historical

The Waikato recordings are of a Kingitanga variant of this waiata. Uehoka Tairākena eplains that in the time of King Mahuta three or four thousand people left Waikato for the East Coast, Te Arawa, Taranaki, etc. They returned when they heard their land was being sold and teh song was composed by those who had stayed in support of the King.
