Biographical / Historical

According to Mohi Ririkore the waiata was composed by Haumapu and Tūrei of Whanganui at the time the prisoners were taken from Parihaka to Otago. The first part of the waiata is also performed as a poi (see McL 487). According to Pare Pirikahu the poin form of the song dates from c.1913. Rawinia Murray states that in Whanganui the waiata can be heard in three forms as waiata, poi, and pātere. The announcement to the waiata quotes a proverb of Tāwhaio's in connection with Parihaka that it was God's decision that the guns would not be fired.
