Biographical / Historical
A song for the King, confirming his right of kingship. According to Riripo Rongo the composer is Awarutu of Waikato. Naki Kino (McL 331) says this version is by Te Kēpa | Te Hingarangi, Maniapoto for his son Tawhi who died of Black 'Flu in 1918. Turau Te Tomo confirms the composer as Te Keepa by gives the subject of the song as Tawhiwhi and adds that Tawhiwhi was a grandson of Te Taroa, chief of Ngāti Rereahu, Ngāti Maniapoto. The performers says this waiata belongs to the elders of Ngāti Haurua. When they say the divisions of the people under King Te Rata they mourned and sang this lament.
