Scope and Contents

A survey conducted as part of a 'Territorial Survey of Oceanic Music' funded jointly by UNESCO, The Institute of Polynesian Studies in Hawai'i, and the University of Auckland. Nine weeks from 22 September 1986 were spent in Nukunonu, Tokelau with a preliminary week in Apia, Samoa in preparations for field work.

The Tokelau co-worker who fully participated in all aspects of the survey work in Nukunonu was Kotelano Kele; Dance ethnographer was Jennifer Shennan; Research assistant in Wellington working on previous Tokelau music recordings was Ineleo Tuia; and researcher and co-ordinator was Allan Thomas.

During their time in Nukunonu they recorded festival music and dance rehearsals and performances; interviews with men and women knowledgeable in traditional music, dance and culture; music, dance and traditional games at the school in Nukunonu; sound toys; and choral singing and percussion.
