Four Minute Papers of the Western Pacific High Commission Secretariat, Suva, Fiji, enclosing correspondence and reports received from the British Consul, Samoa, relative to land claims in the Union Group. The Minute Papers are as follows: (1) W.P.HC. 190/1892. "Report on German Claim to Fanua Fala" (sic). (2) W.P.H.C. 191/1892. "Fakaofa (sic): report on disputed land claims of Jose Pereira." (3) W.P.H.C. 180/1895. "Fakaafo (sic): desire of natives to purchase Fanuafala". (4) W.P.H.C. 211/1907. "Forwards letters from Revd. J.E. Newell on subject of Island Fanuafala and land Fakaafo (sic) also complaint by natives Kalepo.", 1892-1908

Scope and Contents

The documents are enclosed in an official envelope addressed to H.B.M's Agent and Consul for Tonga. The envelope bears the postmark "Suva 4 Jun 08" and is inscribed "Union Group Papers." The papers were probably forwarded to the Agent and Consul for reference in connection with enquiries he was instructed by the High Commissioner to make with the factors of the Deutsche Plantagen und Gosellschaft der Südsee Inseln at Apia in 1908. (Ref. despatch No. 27, High Commissioner to Agent and Consul, dated 24 July, 1908, and despatch Nos. 31 and 35 Agent and Consul to High Commissioner dated 16 September and 14 October, 1908, respectively).
