Subject
Subject Source: Reo
Scope Note: The first organised expression of an independent Māori Christian church established by Pai Mārire prophet and founder Te Ua Haumēne, of Taranaki, in the 1860s. Factions of followers referred to as Hauhau were known to have incited militant action across Aotearoa against the government and, in particular, the missionaries in response to Pākehā confiscation of Māori land. Some of these followers fought alongside Ringatū fighters under the prophet Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Tūruki.
