Biographical / Historical
Professor Steven Webster is an Anthropologist and author. He completed his dissertation on a Quechua village in highland Peru at the University of Washington, Seattle. In 1972 he immigrated with his family to New Zealand, and began his research in Te Urewera with the Tūhoe later that year. Steven taught in the Departments of Anthropology and Māori Studies at the University of Auckland 1972 to 1998. By the 1980s he had specialised in Māori kinship, land history, ethnic politics and political economy.
In 1977 Steven conducted a ceremonial visit to Rapa Nui, where his research is reported in Chapter 2, ‘Finding Maori culture on Easter Island’ of his book ‘Patrons of Maori Culture: Power, Theory and Ideology in the Maori Renaissance’ (1998).
