Biographical / Historical
Kenneth James Hollyman, also known as Jim Hollyman, was a New Zealand linguist and professor of French at the University of Auckland. He taught linguistics courses in the Department of Anthropology - where it first emerged as a distinct subject of study in the 1950s. In 1958 he co-founded the Linguistic Society of New Zealand, and its journal, Te Reo, alongside fellow linguistics professor Bruce Biggs.
Many New Zealand linguists of the time took an interest in studying Māori and Pacific languages, and Jim became a leading scholar of Indo-Pacific regional French, conducting field trips to French-speaking islands in the Pacific such as ‘Uvea and New Caledonia. His book 'A Checklist of Oceanic Languages' (1960) has been selected by scholars as being culturally important and is part of the knowledge base of civilisation as we know it.
