Biographical / Historical

Antony Bramston Hooper (1932-2016) was an anthropologist who specialised in Pacific study and research.

Hooper received a Master of Arts from the University of Auckland in 1958 for his thesis on the Cook Island community in Auckland, followed by a scholarship for doctoral studies at Harvard University. In 1964 he took up a lecturing position at Brown University, where he met Judith Huntsman, forming the beginnings of what would become their collaborative research on Tokelau’s three atolls. Hooper worked closely over the years and part of his research can be found in Huntsman's collections.

Hooper was appointed to a Senior Lecturer position at University of Auckland in 1966, followed by a position at the Pacific Islands Development Program at the East-West Center in Honolulu in 1992. He later worked from Sydney as an independent consultant on culture and development in the Pacific.

Throughout his time at the University of Auckland, Hooper was a key voice in advocating for more attention to and support for research in the Pacific, and was part of a group of scholars and students who successfully called for the establishment of the Centre for Pacific Studies.
