New Hebrides British Service, Office of the Resident Commissioner, general correspondence, 1953-1961
Scope and Contents
Collection contains registers and indexes of general correspondencc and general correspondence files created between 1953 and 1961. As earlier files which were still in use were incorporated into this correspondence run the contents of the files cover a much longer date period.
The general correspondence files may include letters received, replies, related papers and publications along with comments, annotations, and instructions by administrators.

Administrative History
The New Hebrides British Service was established under the Anglo-French New Hebrides Convention of 1906 which provided for joint rule of the New Hebrides by France and Great Britain. It formed part of the Western Pacific High Commission with a Resident Commissioner in Port Vila reporting to the High Commissioner, until the Commission ceased in 1978. The New Hebrides was renamed Vanuatu at independence in 1980.

Custodial History
These records were once part of the holdings of the Central Archives of Fiji and the Western Pacific in Suva, Fiji, which became the Western Pacific Archives (WPA) in 1970. The WPA closed in 1978 and remaining archival collections were transferred to United Kingdom where they were stored by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, at Hanslope Park near Milton Keynes, until 2002.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Transferred to the University of Auckland by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office in October 2002.
