Biographical / Historical
Fatu Feu’u ONZM is a visual artist from Poutasi, Upolu, Samoa. Fatu has lived in New Zealand since the 1960s and began practicing art in the 1980s. While primarily a painter, his art practice incorporates a range of mediums to explore Polynesian art forms such as siapo (bark cloth), tatau (tattooing), weaving, carving and ceremonial mask making.
Fatu co-founded Tautai Pacific Arts Trust in the 1980s, at a time when Pacific art was in the early stages of recognition as a particular genre. The organisation aims to support, mentor and promote contemporary Pacific art in New Zealand. In 2001 he was awarded a New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to the arts.
