Peter Bellwood stories of the Cook Islands recordings
Scope and Contents
Collection of oral history recordings made by Peter Bellwood on the islands of Aitutaki and Mangaia in 1970. Tapes 1 to 4 include stories and genealogies about key historical events and figures, with tape 3 copied from recordings by Simona Naku at Aitutaki. The original Aitutaki recordings were later transcribed and translated into English by Ngereteina Puna of Aitutaki in the Department of Anthropology, University of Auckland from 1970-1971. These translations were recorded in-house and are available as tapes 5 to 8.

Biographical / Historical
Professor Peter Stafford Bellwood is an English archaeologist specialising in the human history of Southeast Asia and the Pacific. His research includes the worldwide origins of agriculture and resulting cultural, linguistic and biological developments, and the prehistory of human migration.
Peter is affiliated with the School of Archaeology and Anthropology at Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra. He served as the former Secretary-General of the Indo-Pacific Prehistory Association from 1990 to 2009, and editor of the Bulletin of the Indo-Pacific Prehistory Association (now the Journal of Indo-Pacific Archaeology).
