The sketchbooks contain pencil, pen and ink, and coloured sketches of landscapes, boats, buildings, as well as charicatures of people. Some of the sketches are clearly related to the later, finished works, such as the sketches of the 'Pied Fantail' and 'Kingfisher' which highlight his attention to colour and geometry.Further information on the sketchbooks is contained in: Johnston, Alexa (1979).
