Scope and Contents

The collection consists of 28 60-minute cassette tapes capturing most of the sessions presented over the course of the weekend.

The tapes include: the pōwhiri and speeches at the Waititi Marae, and at the University of Auckland venue; formal keynote speeches; commentators’ responses; open forums; and the reports on open group sessions. The open group sessions themselves were not recorded.

Biographical / Historical

The Visual Arts Education Symposium was coordinated by the Elam School of Fine Arts in collaboration with the University of Auckland Centre for Continuing Education. The first of its kind in New Zealand, the symposium was held over three days from Friday 30 August, to Sunday 1 September 1985, starting at the Waititi Marae, before moving to the University Conference Centre. Senior lecturers John B. Turner, Christine Hellyar and Phil Dadson organised and led the symposium, with administrative help from the Fine Arts Librarian Valerie Richards.

In response to a growing number of concerns relating to fine arts education, and a desire to make changes, the symposium was organised around the theme ‘Towards the Nineties – source and resource’. Key issues that were raised included the incorporation of Māori art into the curriculum, and whether fine arts education addressed both local and national community needs. Issues of communication within fine arts education sectors and the integration of new computer technologies were also discussed.

Over 150 participants from around New Zealand and overseas attended. The group consisted of art, craft and design educators, administrators and practicing artists.

Arrangement

Cassettes are arranged in chronological order, however, as two recorders were operating in tandem the contents of the cassettes are often staggered, and in some cases duplicated.

The terms ‘copy’ and ‘continuation’ have been used to indicate where this repetition occurs.

‘Copy’ indicates the content is the same as the preceding tape, however sound quality between the copies may vary.

‘Continuation’ indicates recordings with repeated and new content. These recordings may follow directly from the previous recording or begin part-way through and continue further; they may also begin earlier and finish earlier.

During the late 1980s, the tapes were part of the Fine Arts Library’s Cassette Collection. When the Collection was disestablished, they were moved to the Fine Arts Library Special Collections. The cassettes still have their original library numbering, however these numbers do not reflect chronological order.
