Biographical / Historical
James Walter Chapman-Taylor (b. 1878 London, d. 1958 Lower Hutt) is most well known as an architect, particularly of domestic projects, although he was also a furniture designer, builder, photographer and astrologer. He began his career with a building apprenticeship as a teenager. In 1903 he studied architecture and design by correspondence with the International Correspondence Schools of the United States.
A strong proponent of the Arts and Crafts style and ideologies, he completed 110 architectural designs, 97 of which were built, primarily in Wellington, Hawke’s Bay, Auckland, Taranaki and Upper Hutt.
