Biographical / Historical

Charles Reginald Ford was born in London in 1880. After leaving school he joined the Royal Navy. He accompanied Captain Robert Falcon Scott on the first of the Royal Geographical Society’s expeditions to Antarctica (1901-1904). In 1906 he emigrated to New Zealand and began to study architecture. He moved to Whanganui in 1914 and established an architectural practice. In 1919 he and Robert Talboys went into partnership. Ford moved to Auckland in 1923 and formed a partnership with W. H. Gummer. Gummer and Ford went on to become one of the most prominent architectural practices of the time in New Zealand. Ford and Gummer both retired in 1961. He died in Auckland in 1972. He was survived by his second wife, Daphne Jessie Dannefaerd (1904?-1987) and his three children from his first marriage to Edith Christine Smith Badger (1881 -1937).

Charles Duncan Hay-Campbell was born in Edinburgh in 1867 and educated at Linton House School and London University. He studied art at St John’s Wood School, Westminster Art School and the Slade School. He moved to Whanganui, New Zealand in 1915 and taught art at Whanganui Collegiate. He died in Whanganui in 1936 aged 69.
