Biographical / Historical

William Alfred Holman was born in 1864 in Whangarei. He trained under his father H.C. Holman who was colonial architect and superintendent of public works under Governor Hobson. Prior to starting his own practice in Auckland in 1893 he worked in Melbourne.

Holman was a member of the New Zealand Institute of Architects and became president of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Institute of Architects in 1912. In 1914 he retired from active practice due to ill health. He died in 1949, aged 85. 1

The architectural practice Holman Moses was formed in 1915 when Holman’s former assistant L.V. (Lancelot Vivian) Moses became a partner. 2 In around 1927 C.B. (Cyril Bernard) Watkin joined the practice to form Holman Moses and Watkin.

In April 1936 L.V. Moses was appointed director of Messrs. J.R. McKenzie Ltd. and he moved to Wellington to take up the position. 3

C.B. Watkin continued to practice under his own name from April 1936. 4
