Biographical / Historical

Johnson Clark (1882-1957) was one of nine children born to Jemima (nee Ferguson) and Johnson Clark. The predominantly Auckland-based architect was active in Te Aroha around 1911. In 1913 he married Edith Strange from Elstow at Te Horo before settling in Ellerslie, Auckland.

By 1914 Clark had an office in the Imperial Buildings, Queen Street, but by 1918 had relocated to the Palmerston Buildings on the corner of Queen and Customs streets. In 1921 he moved his office to 18 Swanson Street and in 1933 to 30 Shortland Street. From 1925, until his retirement in 1955, Clark was also the Chief Building Inspector for the Ellerslie Borough Council.

Over the course of his career Clark designed several churches including Papakura Presbyterian Church, Hawera Baptist Church and Kohimarama Presbyterian Church which was notably built in a day. Other projects include more than 200 houses, the Municipal Chambers for Ellerslie Borough Council and several industrial buildings for the Colonial Ammunition Company, Normandy Road, Mt Eden. The Arts and Crafts style Worley House, in Arney Road, Remuera, and the former Colonial Ammunition Company Office are both listed by Heritage New Zealand.
