Benjamin Charles Chilwell records
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of work diaries and financial records, as well as photographs of completed residential and commercial projects.
A significant portion of the collection relates to legal proceedings over the Grand Theatre building on Queen Street, Auckland. What began as arbitration over the signing off of work and monies charged grew into a full case heard before the High Court. It was well covered in the news media of the day, and continued into formal complaints and claims of slander and defamation.

Biographical / Historical
Benjamin Charles (B. C.) Chilwell was born in Wensbury, England, in 1879. Trained in England, Chilwell emigrated to New Zealand in 1907, starting work in Auckland as a draughtsman and then practicing as an architect for nearly 40 years; much of this time was spent in partnership with Cecil Trevithick.
A wide variety of work was undertaken from domestic to commercial and industrial. Early work include the Ferry Building, the Whitcombe & Tombs building, and Myers Park Kindergarten; the N.Z. Shipping Co. Ltd building, the Auckland Municipal Abbatoirs, and a range of houses throughout Epsom, Remuera, and the Eastern Bays. Many of the later works featured in Home & Building.
