Scope and Contents

Collection contains a letter from Johannes Andersen to Maurice Buxton Forman, in England, on the subject of Keats scholarship and publishing. The letter mentions Charles Brown, Jnr, son of Keats' friend Charles Armitage Brown who emigrated to New Zealand in 1841. It also mentions Hector Bolitho, New Zealand journalist and royal biographer.

The letter was purchased at auction in January 1985 with a 1936 copy of Johannes Andersen's Tura and the Fairies and The Overworlds and Tu - bound in presentation white kidskin with inscription on flyleaf, To M Buxton Forman from a Fellow-admirer of John Keats. Johannes C. Andesen, New Zealand (in memory of his visit to London - 18 July 1936)..

Biographical / Historical

Johannes Andersen, poet, ethnologist, librarian, editor and historian was born on 14 March 1873 in Denmark. His family came to New Zealand in 1874. He was the first librarian at the Alexander Turnbull Library, from 1918 to 1937. During the 1930s Andersen was also the editor of the Journal of the Polynesian Society. He died in Auckland in 1962.
