Administrative History

The Progressive Bookshop in Auckland was the first cooperative bookshop in New Zealand. Founded in 1936 by Jack and Doris Basham, the shop became a limited liability company in 1937, Progressive Books Limited, run by the Progressive Book Society. The Society promoted left-wing and other literature not well catered for by the mainstream booksellers, such as contemporary art and architecture, and sexuality. As a result, it was supported generally by the arts and literary communities in Auckland. Arthur Jackson-Thomas took over as manager in 1941, a position he retained for over 20 years. By the 1970s the bookshop faced increasing competition from mainstream booksellers, increasing costs and falling sales, and finally closed in 1980. The shop was situated for many years at 14-16 Darby Street.
