Biography

Jack Vowles was Professor and Head of Political Studies at The University of Auckland until 2006. He left to take up a Chair in Politics at the University of Exeter in the middle of 2007, returning to New Zealand in 2012 to become Professor of Comparative Politics at Victoria University of Wellington. He retains a Honorary Fellowship in the Department of Political Studies, and continues to be a regular visitor and research collaborator with staff at Auckland. Jack has had a long relationship with Political Studies at Auckland. He is a BA and MA graduate of the department, and went on to attain his PhD at the University of British Columbia in 1980. He returned to a lecturership in the Auckland department between 1982 and 1989, taught at the University of Waikato between 1989 and 2002, then returned to Auckland (again) to become Professor of Political Studies between 2002 and 2007. Jack leads the New Zealand Election Study (NZES) funded by the Foundation for Research, Science, and Technology from 1996 until 2003, which continues to be based at Auckland. His current research interests are in New Zealand and comparative politics, elections, public opinion, the consequences of electoral systems, and on the relationship between globalization and mass politics. Jack has published extensively in New Zealand and international journals. He is a member of the Planning Committee of the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems (see www.cses.org), and is co-author or co-editor of all five books arising out of the NZES. These provide authoritative analysis of New Zealand elections from 1990 onwards, and have been published by Auckland University Press. The most recent was Voters' Veto (2004). More up-to-date information about his current research can be found on his personal website at www.jackvowles.com.

Dr Vowles was also editorial co-ordinator of "Labour Network" in the 1980s.
