Administrative History
A small union, with only 219 members in 1988, the Northern Iron and Brass Moulders’ Industrial Union of Workers was originally registered as the Auckland Iron and Brass Moulders’ in 1899. In September 1988 the Union amalgamated with the New Zealand (with exceptions) Shipwrights and Boatbuiders, Moulders, Coachworkers, Boilermakers, Pulp and Paper Workers and Optical Technicians’ Union. In turn the Shipwrights, Boatbuilders etc joined with the Manufacturing and Construction Workers Union in 1994.
The Union represented workers covered by the New Zealand Moulders’ award, including jobbing moulders, machine moulders, die casters and core makers. The majority of the Unions members worked in ferrous (iron) and non-ferrous (aluminium and brass) foundries.

Custodial History
The records were donated to The University of Auckland by the Service and Food Workers Union (SFWU) in February 2004. The records had been stored in the SFWU’s building in George St, Kingsland where the Northern Iron and Brass Moulders Industrial Union of Workers had their office prior to amalgamation with the Shipbuilders. It is likely that this small collection of records were left behind by the Union when they moved to new premises post amalgamation.
