Administrative History
The Service and Food Workers’ Union was formed as the Service Workers’ Union in May 1991 with the amalgamation of fifteen regional unions which had been part of the Service Workers’ Federation including the Northern Hotel, Hospital, Restaurant & Related Trades Employees Union, the New Zealand (except Northern) Theatrical and Places of Amusement & Related Employees and the Northern Caretakers, Cleaners, Lift Attendants & Watchmen’s Union. The new union had a membership of some 70,000 members.
However, due to changes in New Zealand’s economic and industrial environment including the introduction of the Employment Contracts Act, the Union’s membership declined dramatically during the first two years of its existence. By 1993 the Union’s membership was down to 30,000 and by 1994 only 24,900 members remained. This decline in membership occurred despite the amalgamation with the Service Workers of the Commercial, Professional, Administrative, Secretarial Staff Union of New Zealand (COMPASS) in December 1992 and the Community Services Union in 1994. In 1996 after the amalgamation of the Food and Beverage Union the Service Workers Union changed its name to the Service and Food Workers’ Union (SFWU).
