Scope and Contents

Collection comprises two diaries kept by Dorothy Stocker (nee Bartrum) between 1902 and 1960. The brief but concise entries describe the work of the author as a missionary in Northern China during the 1920s and 30s and visits 'home' to England and New Zealand. Note that the entries in the earlier diary are intermittent and do not run through the diary in any logical arrangement.

Biographical / Historical

Dorothy Stocker nee Bartrum, 1884-1971. Charlotte Amy Dorothy Stocker was the elder sister of the New Zealand geologist John Bartrum. Known as Dorothy she was the eldest of the nine children of Benjamin Packer Bartrum and Charlotte Amy Hayden of Geraldine, Canterbury, New Zealand.

In May 1913 Dorothy travelled to China as an Anglican missionary. In 1917 in T’ai An-Fu, Shantung, North China, she married Rev Ives Theodore Stocker an English missionary with the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG). During the 1920s and 30s the couple served at various locations in China including Chefoo (Yantai) and Yenchow.

Dorothy left China in January 1941 and spent the remainder of the Second World War in New Zealand. The Rev Stocker, who was at the time the Chaplain of St Andrew’s, Chefoo, remained in China and was interned by the Japanese in the Weihsien Internment Camp near Chefoo. Stocker survived the War and the couple were reunited in England where they made their home in Coulsdon, Surrey.

The Rev Stocker died in 1960 and Dorothy in 1971.
