Barry Lee collection on the Progressive Youth Movement, Auckland Branch.
Scope and Contents
Correspondence, financial records, circulars, press releases, publications, posters, and clippings.
The first part of the collection comprises 30 folders of material relating to the Lees' involvement in the PYM, including hand-written minutes of the early meetings of PYM Auckland meetings, papers related to anti-Vietnam war protests during 1967 and 1968, copies of PYM rebel and examples of pamphlets produced by the organisation.
The remainder of the collection, some twenty folders, comprises left-wing publications dating from the 1980s which appear to reflect the interests of the donor rather than a continuation of the activities of the PYM.

Biographical / Historical
Barry Lee was an active member of the Progressive Youth Movement (PYM) in Auckland during the late 1960s and 1970s.
The PYM was a New Zealand based activist youth group whose main focus was opposition to US involvement in Vietnam, but was also active on anti-apartheid, industrial relations and indigenous rights issues. The Auckland Branch was founded in August 1965 as the Auckland Youth Action Committee on Viet Nam and changed its name to the Progressive Youth Movement in March 1966. Prominent Auckland members included Communist Party member John Gabolinsky (Gabolinscy), Barry’s brother Bill Lee, and his wife Anna Lee, Cliff Kelsall, Sally Lake, and Brian Rooney.
Lee was editor of the organisation’s organ the PYM rebel which was produced by the PYM Auckland between 1970 and 1978 to put forward the facts never reported by the Press, and the views of NZ youth (and those of older rebels) and the PYM in particular
